Fall road hazards for bicyclists in Texas

Texas is a beautiful place for individuals to take their bike out for a ride, especially in the fall. However, bike-riding in the autumn can also prove to be dangerous.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 840 bicyclists killed in car accidents in 2016. This does not include the amount of bike-car crashes that occurred leaving individuals injured but not dead. What are the biggest hazards that cyclists face in the fall?

Slippery surfaces

As the weather starts to cool, cyclists may face the possibility of frost on the roads, as well as wet leaves littering the paths. Both of these things can make it difficult for cyclists to maintain control of their bike.

Rainy weather

Heavy rain can make it hard for drivers to see cyclists who may be sharing the street with them. On top of this, with rain often comes strong wind, which can make it tough for bikers to stay upright. If the rain has built up enough, hydroplaning is a serious possibility, creating hazardous circumstances for both drivers of cars and cyclists.

Many drivers do not expect that there will be bikers out at night, which can make for some dangerous situations. If a car is both not looking for you and cannot see you in time, the likelihood of a collision is high. Making sure to wear reflective clothing or have reflectors on your bike can save you from a bad accident with a car.

Drivers forget about bikers

Drivers of cars may not expect there to be many cyclists on the road once the weather starts to cool, as biking is often considered a summer activity. This can be hazardous for bikers, as cars may not take extra precautions to watch for someone riding their bike in the street. Cars making right and left turns into cyclists also occur often when drivers are not alert.

Biking is a fun activity that is great for both exercise and leisure. However, it is important to keep in mind the hazards you could face when biking in the fall.
